Which Apps Should You Download Before Visiting China?
For most international visitors, the core setup is Alipay + WeChat + AMap Global + DiDi Greater China + China Railway 12306 + Trip.com. Add a reliable translation app, a food-discovery app and the official China arrival-card service, and you will cover most everyday travel needs.

1. Alipay — The Most Useful All-Round Travel App
If we could recommend only one app for a first-time visitor, Alipay would be near the top of the list. International visitors can register with a foreign or Chinese mobile number and bind eligible overseas bank cards.
Beyond normal QR-code payments, Alipay can also provide access to public-transport QR codes, ride-hailing and various mini-app services. Chinese government guidance specifically explains how foreigners can use Alipay for metro and bus transport in supported cities.
2. WeChat — Communication, Payments & Mini Programs
WeChat is not just a messaging app in China. It is widely used for communication between hotels, guides, drivers, restaurants and local businesses, and it also gives travelers access to WeChat Pay and many mini-program services.
Foreign visitors can register with a foreign or Chinese phone number and link supported overseas cards to the payment function, subject to account verification and the card issuer's approval.
3. AMap Global — A Strong Map Choice for International Visitors
AMap Global is the international-facing version of one of China's major navigation platforms. Its current international app listing describes English-language support along with local navigation, traffic, public transport, hotel routes, nearby places and China-specific travel guidance.
For visitors who want a navigation tool built around local Chinese mapping data, it is one of the most useful apps to test before arrival.
Interface language and feature availability can vary by device, app-store region and version. Check the current AMap Global listing before travel.
4. DiDi Greater China — The Ride-Hailing App to Know
Official Chinese government guidance recommends DiDi Greater China as one of the ride-hailing options available to foreign visitors. It states that foreign users can register using overseas mobile numbers and international credit cards, then choose from available ride categories inside the app.
Ride-hailing is especially useful when a destination is awkward by metro, when you have luggage or when you want a clear pickup and destination record without explaining the address verbally.
5. China Railway 12306 — The Official Train Booking Platform
If your itinerary uses high-speed rail, install or register with China Railway 12306. Foreign travelers can register using valid foreign passport information, complete identity verification and buy eligible railway tickets through the official platform.
China Railway explicitly identifies 12306 as its official ticketing website/app and warns that it has not authorized other platforms to provide identical official railway ticketing services.
6. Trip.com — Hotels, Flights & Travel Bookings
Trip.com is useful for international visitors who want an English-friendly travel-booking interface. Chinese government guidance specifically mentions Trip.com for hotel bookings and airport shuttle reservations, with international bank-card payment available for relevant services.
It can be a convenient backup when you do not want to handle every domestic booking through a Chinese-language platform.
7. A Translation App — Essential Outside Tourist Bubbles
You do not need to speak Chinese to travel in China, but a translation tool can make everyday situations much easier. Choose a translation app you already trust and download any available offline Chinese language package before departure.
Useful for menus, signs and notices.
Helpful for simple conversations with drivers or local businesses.
Useful when mobile data is weak or unavailable.
Tip: Also keep your hotel name and address saved in Chinese. A screenshot can be more reliable than trying to pronounce an unfamiliar place name.
8. Meituan or Dianping — Find What Locals Actually Eat
Chinese government travel guidance has recommended Meituan and Dianping for restaurant discovery and reviews. These platforms can help you find everything from famous restaurants to small neighborhood specialties.
The main drawback for many first-time international visitors is that the interface and user-generated content can be heavily Chinese-language based. They are therefore most useful when combined with a translation tool.
9. NIA 12367 / China Online Arrival Card — Use the Official Channel
China introduced online arrival-card filling for foreign visitors in November 2025. The National Immigration Administration says travelers can submit entry information through official NIA channels, including its website, government-service platforms, the NIA 12367 service and supported WeChat and Alipay mini programs.
This service is free. The NIA has warned travelers about fraudulent websites that charge fees for arrival-card filling.
10. Your Airline's Official App — Easy to Forget, Useful When Plans Change
This final recommendation is simple: if you have domestic or international flights during the trip, install the airline's official app before departure. Chinese government guidance notes that domestic flights can be booked through airline websites, apps and WeChat mini programs.
The app is especially useful for schedule changes, check-in availability, baggage information and flight notifications. It is not China-specific, but it can save time when your itinerary includes several domestic sectors.
