China Visa-Free Travel 2026: Countries, Rules & Entry Requirements
A practical guide to China's 30-day unilateral visa-free policy, 240-hour visa-free transit, passport requirements and the rules travelers should check before departure.
Can You Visit China Without a Visa in 2026?
Possibly. China currently applies a 30-day unilateral visa-free policy to ordinary-passport holders from 50 countries. A separate 240-hour visa-free transit policy covers nationals of 55 countries who meet the transit requirements and continue to a third country or region. Mutual visa-exemption agreements and regional policies may also apply.
1. Which Countries Have 30-Day Visa-Free Entry to China?
As of August 2026, China's unilateral visa-free policy covers 50 countries. Eligible travelers must hold valid ordinary passports.
Europe — 35 countries
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Asia — 7
Bahrain, Brunei, Japan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.
Americas — 6
Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Peru and Uruguay.
Oceania — 2
Australia and New Zealand.
2. What Travel Purposes Are Allowed?
Eligible travelers may enter visa-free for short-term purposes including tourism, business, visiting relatives or friends, exchanges and transit. The waiver does not replace the appropriate visa for employment, long-term study, news reporting or other activities that require prior approval.
Border inspection authorities may examine whether your stated purpose matches the visa-free rules.
3. What Documents Should You Carry?
The official rules require an eligible traveler to hold a valid ordinary passport that remains valid for at least the intended period of stay. Temporary or emergency travel documents that are not ordinary passports do not qualify under this unilateral waiver.
Official guidance recommends carrying documents such as tickets, hotel reservations or invitations that correspond to your purpose of entry.
4. How Are the 30 Visa-Free Days Counted?
The current official FAQ states that the visa-free period is calculated from the day after entry and lasts for 30 calendar days.
If you know in advance that you need to stay longer than the visa-free period, apply for the appropriate visa before travel.
5. Can You Enter China Visa-Free More Than Once?
Yes. The current MFA FAQ says eligible travelers may use the unilateral visa-free policy for multiple entries. At present, it does not impose a general restriction on the number of entries, the interval between entries or the total number of visa-free days across separate trips.
Each arrival is still subject to border inspection, and travelers must not engage in activities inconsistent with the permitted purpose of entry.
6. How Long Will the 30-Day Visa-Free Policy Remain in Effect?
| Country / Group | Current Policy Validity |
|---|---|
| Brunei | No stated expiry date under the current unilateral arrangement. |
| Russia | Current MFA FAQ lists the policy through December 31, 2027. |
| Other 48 countries | Current MFA FAQ lists the policy through December 31, 2026. |
Validity dates can be extended or changed. Recheck the latest official notice before booking non-refundable travel.
7. How Does China's 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Work?
This is separate from the 30-day unilateral waiver. China's National Immigration Administration currently lists 55 eligible countries, 65 designated entry ports in 24 provincial-level regions, and a maximum stay of 240 hours (10 days) within the permitted areas.
The Core Transit Rule
You must be traveling from one country or region, through China, and onward to a third country or region. You also need valid international travel documents and confirmed onward transportation that meets the policy requirements.
The 55 eligible nationalities currently include:
Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and the United States.
Oceania: Australia and New Zealand.
Asia: Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Qatar, Singapore, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.
8. 30-Day Visa-Free Entry vs 240-Hour Transit
| 30-Day Unilateral Visa-Free | 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit | |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible nationalities | 50 countries | 55 countries |
| Maximum stay | Up to 30 days | Up to 240 hours / 10 days |
| Third-country onward travel required? | No | Yes |
| Entry ports | Open sea, land and air ports available to foreign nationals, subject to applicable rules | 65 designated ports |
| Travel area | Not limited by the transit permitted-area system | Designated permitted areas only |
9. Other Visa-Free Options You May See
China also has mutual visa-exemption agreements with a number of countries. The permitted passport types, purposes and duration vary by agreement.
Regional policies also exist. One important example is Hainan's 59-country visa-free entry policy, which allows eligible ordinary-passport holders to stay within Hainan Province for up to 30 days for approved short-term purposes.
Do not mix regional rules with the nationwide unilateral 30-day policy; each scheme has its own nationality list, geographical scope and conditions.
10. China Visa-Free Arrival Checklist
China introduced online arrival-card filling for foreign visitors in late 2025. Use only official immigration channels; the official service is free.
